Q: Tony, how did your entrepreneurial journey begin?
Tony Dovale: Entrepreneurship has been in my DNA since childhood. I grew up in a poor family, so I started finding ways to generate income early on—mowing lawns, selling plants door-to-door, making and selling orange juice on the roadside, even flying and selling kites I made myself.
Later, I briefly worked in the corporate IT world as a COBOL programmer, but I’ve always valued freedom over certainty. My number one driver is the ability to choose my own path, even if that means facing uncertainty. Unlike many necessity-driven entrepreneurs, I became an opportunity entrepreneur, willing to take risks and create my own income streams.
Over the past 45+ years, this mindset has allowed me to run businesses, adapt to market changes, and keep pursuing work that aligns with my passion: helping people and teams unlock their full potential.
Q: Tell us more about your current business and its focus.
Tony Dovale: My company, Life Masters, focuses on building high-performance teams and transforming workplace culture. We go beyond traditional “team-building games” and dive into the core of what drives performance—individual mindset, leadership effectiveness, and organizational culture.
We address four key areas:
- People – Developing the individual’s mindset, resilience, and identity.
- Teams – Strengthening collaboration and clearing conflicts.
- Leadership – Cultivating leaders who inspire and align their teams.
- Culture – Creating healthy, high-performance environments where teams can thrive.
Our work spans across South Africa and other African countries like Kenya, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. We’ve even done workshops in the US and UK. Essentially, wherever there are people, teams, and leadership challenges, we can create impact.
Q: What exciting new projects are you currently working on?
Tony Dovale: We are launching our Revolutionary Workplace High-Performance System, built on my proprietary ClearX framework. It focuses on transforming organizational performance through psychological capital, well-being, leadership effectiveness, and culture alignment.
After decades of research and over 21 million rand invested in development, this framework is designed to help companies create happy, healthy, and high-performing workplaces that can adapt to today’s rapidly changing world.
Q: As an experienced entrepreneur, how do you approach client acquisition?
Tony Dovale: I’ve always leaned on SEO and digital visibility to generate leads. My website, lifemasters.co.za, consistently ranks high for leadership and high-performance team-building searches in South Africa.
Beyond that, repeat clients are key. Once companies experience the depth and results of our interventions, they come back for more. It’s always easier to nurture existing relationships than to constantly chase new ones.
We’re also adapting to the new era of AI and digital engagement. I coined the term AdaptAgility, which is all about moving faster than the old business cycles—today, things change in days, not months.
Q: Are you a solopreneur, or do you have a team?
Tony Dovale: I’ve gone full circle—from running a 25-person IT company to becoming a solo entrepreneur, and now back to leading a compact high-performance team of five core members plus external consultants when needed.
AI has changed the game. A small, agile team with the right tools can now achieve what once required 30–40 people. It’s all about efficiency, clarity, and focus.
Q: How do you personally define success?
Tony Dovale: For me, success is freedom and impact. It’s having the freedom to choose my work, my clients, and my lifestyle—while making a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
I often tell my workshop participants: No one ever made a million watching TV. Success comes from focus, resilience, and taking action toward the future you want, not the distractions of comfort or routine.
Q: Any final advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Tony Dovale: Entrepreneurship today requires more than just skills—it demands mindset, resilience, psychological capital, and speed of adaptation.
The world is moving faster than ever, but it’s also easier than ever to create your own path if you’re willing to step out of your comfort zone, act quickly, and learn as you go. Freedom is worth the uncertainty.
“Entrepreneurship gives you freedom, but only if you’re willing to adapt, act fast, and push beyond comfort into possibility.”
