Maureen, can you share how your journey as an entrepreneur began?
I started my business—originally named Metcalf & Associates—in 2001 after leaving Accenture. Initially, I thought I’d collaborate with another company, but I soon realized that owning my own business gave me the autonomy to do meaningful work beyond client deliverables. I wanted the freedom to write, host podcasts, and contribute thought leadership without the limitations that come with working in a large organization. That freedom has been foundational to my mission.
What is the core focus of the Innovative Leadership Institute today?
Our work is centered on helping leaders innovate how they lead. Leaders often spend so much time innovating their industry or business, but not enough time updating themselves. We help leaders upgrade their “leadership algorithm”—the way they think, make decisions, and lead others. Just as we regularly update our phones and software, leadership thinking also needs to evolve. Given today’s volatile and unpredictable world, leaders require a new level of awareness and adaptability to thrive.
Who is your typical audience or client base?
Our clients are leaders across industries—whether they’re in healthcare, tech, or education. We work with individuals, teams, and entire organizations, helping them elevate leadership effectiveness. This includes coaching, workshops, and providing strategic frameworks that make leaders more conscious of how they operate in a world that demands constant change.
Are there any upcoming launches or projects you’d like to highlight?
While we don’t have a major launch coming up right now, I’m especially proud of two things. First, the real impact we’re making with our clients—though often behind the scenes—is incredibly meaningful. And second, our global podcast. It’s free and accessible to everyone, and it’s my way of offering trustworthy, research-based leadership content to a wide audience without barriers. It’s something I’m deeply committed to.
What short-term goals are you working toward in the next year?
Like any business, we have revenue goals, of course. But more importantly, we have impact goals. We’re living through an era of massive change, and effective leadership is crucial. My focus for the next year is to elevate as many leaders as possible—through both our paid programs and our free content. We want to help individuals, organizations, and even communities thrive by strengthening leadership from the inside out.
Do you work alone or have a team supporting you?
I do have a team. While I’m the face of the brand, a dedicated group supports our clients and our mission behind the scenes.
What message would you like to give to women entrepreneurs starting their journey?
Each of us has the power to make a unique impact. Whether you’re a founder, an assistant, or an intern—recognize your gifts and bring them into the world with as much confidence as you can manage. The world needs all of us to step into our strengths.
