Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Women Empowerment & Growth Systems: Melissa Jakes on Building a Scalable Business | Humans of Fuzia

Melissa Jakes

What if building a successful business is not about doing more—but about creating enough trust and systems so you no longer have to do everything yourself?

For event entrepreneur Melissa Jakes, that lesson emerged from a deeply personal goal: becoming more present for her family while building work that felt fulfilling. With a master’s degree in social work and years of experience planning events, Melissa launched her business in 2015 after realizing that the traditional career path did not give her the flexibility she wanted.

Her first year brought three events. The following year, that number grew to roughly 16. But growth also brought a more important question: How can entrepreneurs scale without sacrificing the life they are building the business for?

From Entrepreneurship to Sustainable Leadership

Melissa’s journey reflects a broader challenge facing small business leaders and coaches in 2026: growth increasingly requires more than individual expertise. Team accountability, business systems, client acquisition, messaging clarity, and delegation all become essential as complexity increases.

For Melissa, delegation became a leadership system rather than simply a way to reduce workload.

But delegation, you can’t survive. You’re going to be a one-woman show, a one-man show, and you’re not going to really grow the way that you’re probably wanting to grow if you do not hire on and delegate.

Today, her operation includes a full-time virtual assistant and event staff that can scale to around 20 people. Training enables her team to lead events even when she cannot be there—allowing Melissa to remain present for important family moments.

Growth Systems, Resilience and Social Impact

Her entrepreneurial path also demonstrates the importance of adaptability. When COVID-19 halted live events, Melissa pivoted to virtual experiences and learned multiple platforms to continue serving existing and future clients.

That resilience mirrors what effective leadership coaching increasingly emphasizes: build systems that can adapt, clarify your ideal client profile, strengthen authority through speaking and visibility opportunities, and develop repeatable client acquisition processes rather than relying entirely on the founder.

The Honest Entrepreneur Advantage

Melissa’s definition of honest entrepreneurship is particularly relevant to sustainable growth:

Be honest of how are you feeling about where you are, but then also execute.

For entrepreneurs, that means understanding capacity, setting realistic schedules, and using delegation and AI to remove lower-value tasks. Honest self-assessment can become the foundation for better business systems and stronger leadership.

Execution Tip

Audit your weekly tasks and identify one responsibility you can document, delegate, or automate. Start small, create a simple process, train someone, and measure the result.
