Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Coaching, Women Empowerment, Growth Systems and Social Impact: Morag Barrett on the Power of Relationships

Morag S

What if the biggest growth advantage in business isn’t another strategy, system, or technology—but the quality of the relationships around you?

For leadership expert and entrepreneur Morag Barrett, that belief has shaped two decades of work helping leaders navigate complexity, collaboration, and growth. Her philosophy is simple but powerful: “success in business is powered by relationships and success in life is fueled by connection.”

Through her work at SkyTeam and her Ally Mindset framework, Barrett explores how leaders can build stronger relationships while still protecting their own goals and boundaries. Her perspective offers valuable lessons for entrepreneurs, coaches, women in leadership, and small business leaders navigating the realities of 2026.

Leadership Coaching Begins With Curiosity

Barrett believes curiosity should come before assumptions—particularly when teams span different generations, experiences, and career stages.

“I have a 40-year career and 58 years of experience to offer,” she explains, while emphasizing that younger professionals also bring perspectives that experienced leaders may overlook.

Her approach is to understand people’s journeys before deciding what they need. In uncertain moments—from missed milestones to the rapid adoption of AI—leaders need trusted relationships that help them separate “the facts, the fiction, and the half-truths” and make informed decisions.

The Ally Mindset: A Growth System Built Around People

Barrett’s framework identifies five practices: abundance and generosity, connection and compassion, courage and vulnerability, candor and debate, and action and accountability.

Together, these practices create a practical leadership development system. Leaders identify the relationships connected to their goals, understand colleagues beyond job titles, create space for honest conversations, and turn those conversations into action.

For entrepreneurs facing team accountability, messaging challenges, client acquisition, and growth complexity, the lesson is relevant: scalable business systems still depend on human relationships.

Entrepreneurship, Visibility and Sustainable Growth

Barrett has built visibility through speaking, writing, LinkedIn, Fast Company contributions, and other thought-leadership platforms. Yet she cautions entrepreneurs against trying to be everywhere.

Her advice is to identify the “critical few” places where the right audience is already present and go deeper rather than spreading yourself thin. Speaking opportunities, authority-building content, referrals, and focused outreach can support sustainable business growth.

Her entrepreneurial journey also reinforces the importance of intentional growth. After 20 years in business, she says, “This is the hardest I’ve ever worked and the most fun I’ve had.” She encourages service-based entrepreneurs to decide what lifestyle they want first—and then build the business around it.

Delegation, Systems and Women in Leadership

Barrett began as a solopreneur but now leads a core team of five employees alongside an extended network of trusted partners. Her message to entrepreneurs is direct: “start delegating and outsourcing a lot sooner than you think you are ready for or can afford.”

That principle connects leadership development with scalable execution: build systems, delegate deliberately, and create partnerships that allow the founder to focus on high-value work.

Execution Tip

Identify three to five goals you want to achieve over the next six months. For each goal, write down the people who can help or hinder progress. Then choose one relationship to strengthen this week through a genuine conversation—not a transaction.
