Dr. Ben Reinking: Guiding Physicians Toward Balance Beyond Burnout

Dr. Ben Reinking

Meet Dr. Ben Reinking — a physician, educator, and founder of The Developing Doctor. Alongside his full-time role at a university, Dr. Reinking has dedicated himself to helping fellow doctors navigate one of the most pressing challenges in modern medicine: burnout. His story is one of resilience, self-discovery, and a commitment to making sure physicians not only excel in their careers but also find fulfillment in their personal lives. At Humans of Fuzia, we are honored to feature him for his mission of reminding healthcare professionals that their well-being matters just as much as the patients they serve.

Q: Who is Dr. Ben Reinking beyond being a physician?
A: First and foremost, I’m a partner, a dad, a brother, and then a physician. People are at the core of everything I do — whether it’s through medical practice or coaching, my purpose is to care for others.

Q: What inspired you to start The Developing Doctor?
A: After completing years of medical training and stepping into practice, I realized that the workload never truly became lighter — it just shifted. I worked harder and harder, until I reached a point where effort alone wasn’t the answer anymore. Through self-exploration and coaching, I discovered that doctors often need to unlearn harmful habits ingrained during training. I saw colleagues struggling in the same way, and that’s when I decided to create The Developing Doctor to help physicians work differently, not harder.

Q: Who do you work with through your coaching?
A: I primarily work with physicians who genuinely love medicine but struggle with finding balance in their personal and professional lives. Many of them want to stay in medicine but also want to be present as parents, partners, or individuals with hobbies. I help them create a path that allows them to thrive both personally and professionally.

Q: What challenges have you faced while building your coaching venture?
A: One of the biggest challenges has been stepping into the business world without formal training. Marketing, branding, and PR were all foreign to me, and I initially thought building a business would be quick. Instead, I’ve learned that it’s a slow process that requires patience, consistency, and smart strategies. It’s been a big learning curve, but also a rewarding journey of growth.

Q: What are your current short-term goals?
A: Right now, my focus is on increasing visibility for my coaching services and online course. More visibility means I can reach more physicians who are struggling and support them in finding balance. Ultimately, my goal is to help more doctors create lives that honor both their professional ambitions and personal values.

Q: What message would you like to share with our readers, especially women, entrepreneurs, and parents juggling multiple responsibilities?
A: There’s always a path forward that aligns with your values. It’s okay to prioritize what matters to you, even if others don’t see it as important. When you honor your values, you find the balance that allows you to thrive.

“In medicine and in life, working harder isn’t always the solution — sometimes, the real breakthrough comes from learning to work differently.” — Dr. Ben Reinking
