What were your initial years of growing up like? Tell us about your life before starting your corporate journey/venture/initiative.
Growing up was a bit rough. I came from a religious family where discipline is the core value. It’s really helped me to become the woman I am today because my dad, though he’s late, believed in having a good attitude, behaving right, and living right. During my early life, I never went to a good High School because of funding. but I was a girl who strived to grow and to becoming independent, I struggled to pass my grades on chemistry and physics as this was a result of poor teaching, during high school, I never had a good chemistry and physics teacher and that was the core subject for me to pass for my exams which will enable me get admission into college. That affected me psychologically and made me skip some years before getting into college. Finally when I got into college, the course I wanted to study was medical Laboratory Science but I couldn’t study the course because the college I was admitted to was not offering the course. So, I ended up studying Microbiology. I graduated and was awarded the best student with a distinction level.
On completing the Nigeria youth services core, getting a job regarding the course I studied was difficult and frustrating. The job I needed in order to align with the course I studied, required a masters degree which I was not able to acquire because of lack of financial assistance. I was forced to take on menial jobs which was so frustrating, but I had to, in order to take care of myself and my family. At that time my lovely dad who really inspired and supported me had fallen ill with kidney failure, it was a terrible time in my life. My dad was the source of financial stability, my mum who was a professional teacher gave up her career to take care of us. The first job I had was teaching, I was paid less and was living in an uncompleted building for 3 years. There was no light, no water, no security and I was living there alone, how I survived can only be determined by God. All this was to get something done to help my sick dad who later died in 2017 and was buried in 2018. After the death of my father, I had to stay back to help my mum and other siblings. I started going for online training to acquire skills that can enable me to get a good paying job. During this journey, I was able to discover that many young individuals lack clarity and needed help especially in terms of their careers and goals. This birthed the vision of helping young individuals to navigate Their way in career, leadership, and business. I also took interest in advocacy, especially towards women and girls, where an equitable society can be achieve with equal rights.
My goal is to create a unique space where women and girls can be empowered through education, vocational learning and skill acquisition. Also to increase women’s voice in leadership and political space. I was inspired by Ene Obi, the previous Country director of ActionAid Nigeria, who is a transformative trainer, she advocates for democracy, and guides professional women through life.
