Q: Can you share your journey and what inspired you to build your career in marketing and entrepreneurship?
Tom Livingstone: I studied English with creative writing at university because I knew I wanted to do something creative, but I wasn’t sure how to turn that into a career. I used to write songs and perform, but I eventually moved into blog writing, which then led to marketing copywriting and advertising.

From there, I worked in several startup environments where I handled broader marketing responsibilities. These roles were fast-paced and sometimes chaotic, but they helped me learn quickly and shaped my understanding of marketing strategy.

Later, I became Head of Marketing at a tech recruitment company, where I spent over five years helping the business grow globally. When that chapter ended, I started consulting without a clear plan to build an agency. However, while working with a client struggling with branding strategy, I realized there was a gap in the market for a more strategic approach. That realization eventually led me to start my own agency.


Q: What does your work at Measured Agency focus on?
Tom Livingstone: My agency focuses on helping businesses with branding and marketing through a strategic foundation. Many companies jump straight into execution without a clear strategy, which can lead to wasted time and money.

I work closely with clients to understand their needs and then collaborate with a network of freelancers who specialize in areas like design, video production, or technical work. I remain directly involved in projects, especially in strategy and content, while specialists handle execution.

This model allows businesses—especially small ones without in-house marketing teams—to access high-quality support in a flexible and cost-effective way.


Q: Who is your target audience and how do clients typically connect with you?
Tom Livingstone: Most of my clients are small businesses that don’t yet have their own marketing or branding departments. Some larger organizations also work with me when they have specific gaps or need additional support.

Many clients come through referrals or find me on LinkedIn. I’m working on building my online presence so people can easily discover my work, but I’m always open to conversations with businesses that need support.


Q: What has been the biggest challenge you’ve faced as an entrepreneur?
Tom Livingstone: As a solo founder, one of the biggest challenges is battling self-doubt. The success of the business depends entirely on you, and that can feel overwhelming.

Marketing itself is subjective, so it’s sometimes difficult to measure whether you’re doing a good job, which can affect confidence. There’s also a constant sense of uncertainty about business stability.

I used to think full-time employment offered more security, but I realized that even traditional roles can be uncertain. That perspective helped me take the leap into entrepreneurship with the mindset of “What do I have to lose?” It’s still challenging, but it’s also incredibly rewarding.


Q: What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?
Tom Livingstone: Resilience is key. Entrepreneurship isn’t about being amazing every single day—it’s about showing up consistently and continuing even when things feel difficult.

There will always be good days and challenging days. What matters is the ability to keep going. If you already demonstrate resilience in your daily work or personal life, you likely have the qualities needed to build something of your own.
