Tom Kavanaugh: Turning Dyslexia into a Gateway for Lifelong Learning

Tom Kavanaugh

For many, learning challenges can feel like lifelong roadblocks—but for Tom Kavanaugh, they became the very reason to reimagine what learning could look like. A business coach and accelerated learning instructor, Tom’s journey from struggling with dyslexia to mastering innovative learning systems is both empowering and deeply human. At Humans of Fuzia, we’re proud to share stories like Tom’s with our 5M+ global community—stories that remind us that growth is possible for everyone, regardless of the obstacles they begin with, and that inclusive support systems are key to empowering both women and men in leadership and beyond.

What inspired you to begin your journey as a coach and accelerated learning instructor?
In 2008, I started researching whether there were accelerated learning programs designed for someone like me—someone who is dyslexic. I discovered several disciplines, including the PhotoReading Whole Mind System, mind mapping, Genius Code, and neuro-linguistic programming. These systems helped me absorb information in ways that bypassed the conscious processing challenges associated with dyslexia. I studied directly with the creators of these methods and eventually became an instructor in each of them. For the past 18 years, I’ve been teaching accelerated learning programs, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, I transitioned into business coaching alongside my teaching work.

What challenges did you face while establishing your business, especially in terms of marketing?
Marketing wasn’t as difficult as one might expect because I knew there were people out there who were truly struggling with learning challenges. I focused on identifying who I wanted to serve, finding where they were, and offering them valuable information they could apply immediately in their lives. The real secret to marketing is helping people first. When you provide useful, actionable content, you become an attraction magnet rather than someone trying to sell something.

What has been one of your proudest milestones so far?
Graduating from Marine Corps Boot Camp at Parris Island was one of my earliest accomplishments. Later, learning how to read a book at speeds of one page per second was incredibly impactful—it showed me that I could learn despite my dyslexia. I went on to complete my undergraduate degree in 12 months and my master’s degree in 16 months. One of the most rewarding experiences in my work has been helping a trauma survivor who was once 100% disabled due to PTSD return to active duty and eventually earn his PhD.

As someone working closely with professionals, what are your thoughts on women in leadership today?
I believe women should absolutely receive equal pay for equal work. In many cases, women bring a balanced and stable approach to leadership that ensures outcomes aren’t zero-sum. Their leadership style often focuses on creating situations where everyone walks away with an opportunity to succeed, which is essential in today’s collaborative business environment.

What is your idea of success—personally and professionally?
Success comes down to understanding how to set and achieve goals. It’s important to remember that success is a journey, not a destination. Once you achieve one goal, you need to set the next benchmark to keep moving forward. Our minds are incredible goal-seeking mechanisms, and as long as we continue setting meaningful goals, we give ourselves the opportunity to grow and achieve throughout our lives.

“Success is about understanding that we’re all on a journey—and continuing to set meaningful goals for as long as we’re here.”
