Q: Raj, can you take us back to the beginning of your journey and share what inspired your path?
Raj Kapur:
I came to the United States from India in 1987 with just $20 in my pocket and a dream. From the very beginning, I had two clear aims in life—entrepreneurship and working with nonprofit organizations to empower people. After completing my MBA, I joined a nonprofit organization, initially thinking it would be temporary. But that role turned into an 18-year journey where I truly fell in love with the impact nonprofits create.
Over the years, I became a CFO and focused on ensuring financial stability so these organizations could continue their mission-driven work. Later, I joined another nonprofit that was on the verge of shutting down. Instead of walking away, I chose to stay and fix it. Within three years, we turned massive losses into stability, and the organization went on to be recognized as one of the best places to work. That experience shaped me into what I call a “transformational expert” for nonprofits.
Q: You’ve spoken openly about challenges and failures. How have they shaped who you are today?
Raj Kapur:
Failures are not something to be feared—they’re something to be embraced. Many people try to forget their failures, but I believe you should learn from them so you don’t repeat the same mistakes. One of the biggest challenges in my life came when I was involved in a business that went wrong, leaving me over $50,000 in debt. I was advised to file for bankruptcy, but I refused.
Instead, I chose to learn everything I could about money, wealth, and responsibility. Within three years, I became completely debt-free. That experience taught me the importance of financial awareness, whether you’re running a nonprofit, a business, or a household. Today, I coach people on understanding money not as something to fear, but as a tool to live responsibly and with freedom.
Q: What led you to start your coaching and consulting journey?
Raj Kapur:
While working as a CFO, I always felt a deeper calling to help people directly. I was comfortable behind a desk, but I knew I wanted to speak, connect, and make a broader impact. Over time, I became certified as a coach, consultant, and trainer, including leadership coaching and hypnotherapy.
I began working with individuals, nonprofits, and corporations—helping them with leadership, communication, mindset, and confidence. My focus has always been on helping people break out of their shell and realize that there is so much more possible in their lives if they’re willing to face their fears.
Q: When you started your entrepreneurial ventures, what were some of the biggest challenges you faced?
Raj Kapur:
Entrepreneurship looks glamorous from the outside, but once you step into it, the real challenges begin. One of my biggest struggles was visibility—especially adapting to social media and being comfortable in front of the camera. That didn’t come naturally to me.
But I learned that if you don’t show up, people won’t know how you can help them. The key is to keep moving forward, even when things feel uncertain. There were moments when I questioned whether things would work out at all, but over time, the right people came into my life, and things started aligning. Success doesn’t happen overnight—it’s built over years of persistence, learning, and belief.
Q: What is your perspective on AI and the changes it’s bringing across industries?
Raj Kapur:
AI is here to stay—you either embrace it or reject it. I believe it’s a powerful tool if used correctly. It starts with mindset. AI shouldn’t replace your thinking; it should enhance it. For me, it helps with research and efficiency, saving time that once took days or weeks.
However, you must understand what’s accurate and what’s not. AI works based on what you feed it, so responsibility and awareness are key. Used wisely, it can help people grow faster, learn more, and work smarter—but it should never replace authenticity or human judgment.
Q: What message would you like to share with aspiring entrepreneurs and leaders?
Raj Kapur:
Entrepreneurship requires risk—but calculated risk. Fear is something everyone experiences, and it’s often the biggest reason people stop. The difference between those who succeed and those who don’t is simple: successful people move forward despite fear.
Mindset is everything. Challenge your limiting beliefs and invest in understanding yourself. Learn continuously—learning doesn’t stop with degrees or age. Most importantly, invest in yourself. That’s the greatest investment you’ll ever make.
“Fear exists for everyone—but growth begins the moment you choose to move forward despite it.” — Raj Kapur
