What if the biggest barrier to business growth isn’t a lack of expertise, but the inability to communicate its value to the right people?
For entrepreneurs in 2026, building a sustainable business requires more than delivering excellent services. Clear messaging, consistent client acquisition, and scalable growth systems are equally important. Through its global thought-leadership platform, Humans of Fuzia (HOF) explores these challenges at the intersection of leadership, entrepreneurship, coaching, women empowerment, and socially conscious business, sharing real-world lessons from founders and business leaders.
In a conversation with HOF, Darin Short, founder of Intersites, shared how curiosity about different cultures shaped his career—and why listening, strategic positioning, and professional marketing matter for business growth.
From Accounting to Cross-Cultural Leadership
Short’s journey demonstrates that professional growth rarely follows a straight line. After studying accounting, earning his CPA license, and spending 13 years in accounting and values-based investing, he pursued intercultural relations and launched Intersites in 2007.
His motivation began much earlier, through friendships with people from different cultural backgrounds and a university experience living with a host family in Costa Rica.
For Short, growth means maintaining a learner’s mindset. As he explained, “It means setting an expectation for yourself that there is always, always, always more to learn.”
Today, he works with global companies employing approximately 25 to 2,000 people across multiple countries. His work helps teams navigate cultural misunderstandings, strengthen collaboration, and achieve shared outcomes.
Leadership Coaching Starts With Listening
In multicultural workplaces, good intentions do not always translate into effective teamwork. Differences in communication, values, and expectations can create friction even when everyone wants the same results.
Short believes trust begins with listening rather than preparing a response. He asks open-ended questions, encourages people to share their experiences, and acknowledges perspectives he may not personally agree with.
This approach offers a valuable lesson for leadership coaching: meaningful collaboration requires curiosity, empathy, and the ability to understand different viewpoints.
For socially conscious leaders, these practices can help build stronger teams and more inclusive work cultures.
Business Growth Requires Clear Positioning
Short openly acknowledged a challenge familiar to independent consultants and entrepreneurs: managing every aspect of a business while maintaining the quality of their core services.
From developing training programs and presentations to handling accounting, legal requirements, and marketing, competing priorities can limit business growth.
His experience with client acquisition illustrates the importance of a deliberate strategy. Initially, word-of-mouth referrals and a self-built website produced limited reach. Over time, he began contributing to LinkedIn conversations, answering questions, and sharing useful perspectives. Today, he estimates that around 40% of his work comes from LinkedIn activity.
His advice to his younger self was direct: “I would narrow my message and narrow my target market and invest in professional marketing services.”
For entrepreneurs, this translates into three practical priorities: define an ideal client profile (ICP), communicate a focused value proposition, and build repeatable systems for visibility and lead generation. Delegating specialist tasks can also free business owners to focus on delivery and client relationships.
Execution Tip
Identify your three most time-consuming business activities this week. Decide which directly generate revenue, which strengthen client relationships, and which could be delegated or systematized. Then clarify one specific client problem your business solves and communicate it consistently across your website and LinkedIn profile.
