Lane Clark is a trader and entrepreneur with over 25 years of experience who is on a mission to shake up the outdated wealth management industry. As the co-founder of TPP (The Portfolio Platform), Lane helps everyday investors access benchmark-beating strategies, cutting through the inefficiencies of traditional financial advisors. His journey is one of persistence, resilience, and building solutions that challenge the status quo — values that align with the spirit of Humans of Fuzia, where we celebrate stories that inspire, empower, and disrupt for good.
Q: Tell us about your entrepreneurial journey and your current ventures.
I’ve been a trader and entrepreneur for over 25 years, and my focus has always been on disrupting the stale and outdated wealth management model. Five years ago, we created the Portfolio Platform, a fintech business that showcased benchmark-beating strategies for everyday investors. Two years ago, we built on that foundation with TPP, a portfolio management service designed to help frustrated investors who’ve been let down by traditional wealth managers. What started as a way to help friends and family has grown quickly — today we work with clients across 12 countries, have attracted strong investors, and are building toward significant scale over the next three to five years.
Q: Who do you usually work with, and in which markets?
We’re a direct-to-consumer business, which means we cut out wealth managers and financial advisors to bring our products straight to investors. Most of our clients are based in the UK, but we also operate in Europe and the Middle East. Typically, they’re 40-plus, have invested before, and are frustrated with underperformance — 80% of wealth managers underperform the market, which is a stat that follows investors everywhere. By the time they find us, they’ve often tried multiple avenues and are still looking for real results. That’s where we come in.
Q: Many entrepreneurs struggle with acquiring clients. How did you tackle that challenge?
At first, we thought “if you build it, they will come” — but that’s not true. Yes, you need a great product, but you also need to let people know about it. Initially, referrals worked really well for us. Then we grew a database of prospective investors, sending them free market reports three to four times a week — educational, insightful, and designed to build trust over time. That list has now grown to over 500,000. More recently, we’ve built a content strategy across LinkedIn, Medium, Instagram, and other platforms, always providing value first, and only occasionally talking directly about TPP. This combination of referrals, education, and content has become our growth engine.
Q: Do you run this as a solopreneur, or do you have a team?
I co-founded the business with Ed Davis, and together we drive the growth and vision. We also have a compliance team, administration support, a small marketing team, and we often work with consultants to bring in specialist expertise as needed. It’s very much a collaborative effort — while I’m focused on growth, we couldn’t do what we do without a strong team supporting us.
Q: What inspirational message would you share with someone starting their entrepreneurial journey today?
It may not sound glamorous, but the reality is this: being an entrepreneur is never plain sailing. You will face setbacks, challenges, and lean times. But if you learn from those moments and keep building stronger, more resilient models, you will grow. Success comes from doing the right things over and over, learning from mistakes, and aligning your product with the right strategy. The journey is tough and winding, but if you stay the course, you’ll get where you need to be.
“The entrepreneurial journey is never plain sailing — but it’s the setbacks, and what you learn from them, that make success possible.” – Lane Clark
