Born under apartheid in South Africa, Kosha Joubert has dedicated her life to bridging divides, healing collective trauma, and nurturing communities of resilience. From leading global networks of regenerative communities to spearheading trauma integration projects in some of the world’s most crisis-affected regions, Kosha’s journey reflects the power of compassion, courage, and collective healing. Her story resonates deeply with Humans of Fuzia’s mission to spotlight leaders who inspire, uplift, and empower our global community of 5 million+ changemakers.
Q: What inspired you to start your journey of healing and community building?
I grew up in South Africa under apartheid — a system built on fear and separation. Early on, I felt compelled to build bridges across divides, to overcome separation. After studying cultural anthropology and organizational development, I realized that communities on the ground can be powerful catalysts for transformation. This led me to spend over 25 years building communities worldwide through the Global Ecovillage Network, reaching over 6,000 regenerative communities and co-founding Gaia Education. Eventually, I transitioned to leading the Pocket Project, focusing on healing collective and ancestral trauma globally.
Q: What have been some of your biggest challenges?
The vision of regenerative communities is a high dream — revitalizing ecosystems, economies, and cultures. Yet, the pain embedded in human relationships often hampers such efforts. On both local and global levels, the unhealed wounds of colonialism, slavery, and injustice restrict our ability to co-create solutions. At the UN Climate Conferences, for instance, I saw how nations often act from self-interest rather than collective need. My biggest challenge has been developing tools to transform these relational wounds into healing movements.
Q: What milestones are you most proud of?
At the Pocket Project, we’ve delivered trauma relief support to some of the world’s most pressing crises — from Ukraine to Palestine to Jewish communities. We’re training 175 young Ukrainian leaders in Resilience Circle Facilitation, enabling them to support each other amid war. We’re also training 300 facilitators in Global Social Witnessing — a practice of engaging with global news in an embodied, relational way to reduce anxiety and build resilience. Additionally, we’re opening dozens of Collective Trauma Integration Labs worldwide, with over 250 facilitators leading healing processes in 60 different trauma areas by next year. This work fills me with hope for the future.
Q: What are your thoughts on women in leadership today?
I believe women carry both incredible strength and deep ancestral wounds. To thrive as leaders, we must create supportive, healing circles to avoid burnout, competition, or simply adopting masculine survival strategies. At the Pocket Project, we host the World Women’s Summit, showcasing women who stop wars, heal gender violence, and lead networks across Ukraine, Palestine, Syria, Latin America, and Asia. Humanity needs the feminine approaches we’re still discovering — ways of transforming systems to support life rather than destroy it. True progress requires healing both feminine and masculine wounds so that, like an eagle with two strong wings, humanity can finally fly.
Q: How do you personally define success?
Success begins within. It’s about being true to my inner compass, listening to the guidance of my heart, and aligning with my deepest purpose. Healing my own wounds — like patterns formed from childhood abuse — has been essential to seeing life clearly and stepping into my power. True success also means creating circles of support and inspiring others to awaken from the wounds of the past. My purpose is to bring seeds of inspiration to thousands, even hundreds of thousands of people, so we can step into a future of post-traumatic growth together.
“True success begins deep within. By healing ourselves and creating supportive circles around us, we unlock the power to transform our communities and the world.”
