Kim Doyal’s story is one of resilience, reinvention, and impact. After facing unimaginable loss, she transformed her life’s challenges into a mission of empowerment—building her own business, leading in content marketing, and now championing women’s voices in AI and leadership. Her journey reminds us that strength comes from not just surviving but creating, and she continues to inspire women worldwide to step up, speak up, and lead with courage.
Q: What inspired you to start your entrepreneurial journey?
I lost my husband in a car accident in 2003, and my kids were six and two at the time. Life turned upside down, but after a small settlement, I knew I had to create something of my own so I could be around for them. I attended a conference in San Francisco, discovered internet marketing, and thought, what is this? That curiosity led me to dig in, learn, and start my business in 2008.
Q: What were the biggest challenges you faced in the beginning?
I wasn’t technical by nature, nor did I have a marketing background. Everything was new—and at that time, the internet space was male-dominated. But not knowing actually made it easier. I just figured things out as I went. The real challenge was balancing everything as a single parent while managing and growing a business.
Q: Have you always worked as a solopreneur?
Yes, I’m a solopreneur now. I’ve had a team before, even ran an outsourcing company, but I realized I prefer creating over managing. With the rise of AI, I believe you don’t necessarily need a big team anymore—just the right partnerships.
Q: What milestone are you most proud of?
In 2018, I launched an e-commerce company with a partner. We created a physical content planner and grew it to about half a million dollars in sales. Beyond that, I’m proud of my consistency—writing my newsletter for over 240 weeks straight and podcasting for a decade. More than anything, I’m proud of sticking with it for nearly 18 years and now being in a space where I love what I do.
Q: What are your thoughts on women in leadership today?
We need more. Especially in AI, where training models without women’s voices risks reinforcing bias. Women bring unique perspectives and when they succeed, they uplift their communities. I believe strongly in using our voices—even if it makes people uncomfortable. The more women lead, the more change we can create globally.
Q: What is your advice for aspiring women leaders and entrepreneurs?
Use your voice. Say what needs to be said without fear of making people uncomfortable. Every time a woman speaks up, she gives another woman permission to do the same. I raised my daughter to be the boss from day one, and I believe the next generation will only go further if we set the example.
Q: What does success mean to you now?
Today, success means peace and contentment. It means having quality relationships, doing work I love, and feeling fulfilled. Years ago, I might have defined success by financial numbers, but now I know—nothing beats peace.
“Success is peace and contentment. When women take care of themselves first, they create stronger relationships and communities. We don’t need selfless women—we need women who use their voices.” — Kim Doyal
