Ken Newman on Building an Unconventional Career by Following Curiosity

Ken Newman

What if the most rewarding career isn’t the one you plan, but the one you allow yourself to discover?

For Ken Newman, a college acting class became the starting point of a career that moved through theatre, television, corporate entertainment, professional magic, photography, travel writing, and music. At 72, his journey offers a powerful reminder that professional growth doesn’t always follow a straight line. Sometimes, it begins with being willing to say yes.

Originally studying science and pre-med at Cornell University, Newman discovered acting almost by accident. Despite the uncertainty surrounding his decision to change direction, he chose to pursue what excited him rather than follow a conventional path to financial security.

His guiding principle was simple: lead with the heart.

The Power of Saying Yes

Newman’s career developed through opportunities he could not have predicted. One of his most influential lessons came from long-form improvisation, where performers build on an idea instead of shutting it down. The principle, commonly expressed as “yes, and,” became a philosophy for his professional life.

When he contacted an educational theatre company looking for a specific type of performer, his background did not neatly match the job description. Instead of ruling himself out, he explained what he could offer. The conversation led to an audition and, ultimately, an opportunity.

That willingness to explore unfamiliar territory carried him into television, award-winning productions, and corporate entertainment. With his business partners, Newman helped create comedy experiences for major technology companies, eventually developing Magnet Productions to use humour as a marketing tool at trade shows.

Later, a client’s request to incorporate magic into a performance opened yet another door. Newman learned the craft, became a professional magician, and performed internationally.

Photography and travel writing followed, shaped by his wife Janice’s writing and his own interest in capturing the world around him. Each chapter added a new skill set without requiring him to abandon everything that came before.

Success Beyond Financial Rewards

Newman’s story challenges the idea that a successful career must be built around a single identity or an ever-increasing income. For him, fulfilment came from following interests, taking calculated risks, and remaining open to unexpected possibilities.

Today, his focus includes music and flamenco guitar. Through his music, he directs earnings toward charitable causes, supporting children with disabilities and families in Mexico who need access to therapy.

His work has evolved, but the underlying motivation remains consistent: doing something meaningful and sharing its benefits with others.

His advice to aspiring professionals is equally relevant in a world that often pressures people to have their futures mapped out early. Curiosity can be more valuable than certainty, especially when the willingness to learn creates opportunities that planning alone may never reveal.

As Newman puts it, “Be more interested than interesting.” Listening closely, learning from others, and approaching new experiences with genuine curiosity can lead to relationships and possibilities that are impossible to predict in advance.

His journey is proof that a career doesn’t have to be a straight line to be purposeful. Sometimes, the most meaningful direction emerges one unexpected opportunity at a time.
