Kaia Colban: Using Technology to Bring Communities Back Together

Kaia Colban

Kaia Colban is a community-driven innovator and the founder of ShareVita, an initiative built on the belief that technology — when used with compassion — can reconnect people in meaningful ways. With a background in business strategy and early-stage tech, Kaia walked away from profit-focused work to pursue something deeply personal: rebuilding real-world connection during a time when loneliness is rising. Her journey reminds our global Humans of Fuzia community that leadership can be rooted in empathy, purpose, and impact.

What inspired you to start your journey with ShareVita?
I’ve always been passionate about community. Most of my career was spent working with early-stage companies, but everything was centered around shareholder value — and that just wasn’t where my heart was. I wanted to build something that aligned with my values, so I created ShareVita with the mission of using technology to rebuild communities and bring people closer together. Tech often contributes to loneliness — but when used intentionally, it can connect people in real life.

What challenges have you faced, especially around marketing and growth?
We’re a nonprofit and currently pre-revenue, so we don’t have a marketing budget. That makes it difficult to grow as a consumer-facing company. I’m grateful to have an amazing team of volunteer interns helping with design and social media, and we’re forming partnerships with organizations that also want to give back. Since we don’t rely on advertising, we take everything step by step.

What has been your proudest milestone so far?
One of our platforms, ShareSkippy, connects dog owners with dog lovers who don’t have dogs of their own. It’s completely free and non-transactional. Shortly after launch, I received an email from a woman who had recently lost her dog of 14 years. Through ShareSkippy, she met someone in her neighborhood and started spending time with their puppy — and it brought her so much joy. Seeing real human happiness created through something we built was incredibly meaningful.

What is your perspective on women in leadership today?
Women are incredibly strong, but breaking into executive roles is often harder because of systemic barriers. Yet research shows that investing in female founders leads to higher returns — women are often overlooked when they shouldn’t be. I believe women should support one another, champion each other, and create spaces where everyone can succeed.

What advice would you give to aspiring women leaders and entrepreneurs?
Don’t be afraid to speak up. Share your ideas, raise your hand, and don’t hold back just to keep the peace. It’s okay to disagree. Be yourself, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to be “the loud one in the room” — you’re probably not as loud as you think.

How do you personally define success?
Success, to me, is doing something I love — something I feel empowered by. We spend most of our lives working, and I want my work to create positive impact. If I can look back and feel that I brought joy, connection, laughter, and smiles into people’s lives, then that’s a life worth living.

“For me, success is about creating real impact — building communities, bringing people together, and leaving behind more kindness and connection than I found.”
