Jeremy Laight: Building Community and Careers Through Collaboration

Jeremy Laight

Jeremy Laight is a leading London-based fractional marketing consultant and the founder of The Slice Network, a fast-growing community created to support fractional marketers who often feel isolated in their careers. Through his purpose-driven approach, Jeremy is redefining what meaningful work and collaboration look like in today’s evolving professional landscape. His journey reflects resilience, empathy, and a deep belief in shared success—values that resonate strongly with the Humans of Fuzia community and our mission to support women and leaders worldwide.

Q: What inspired you to start your journey with The Slice Network?

Jeremy: The Slice was inspired by lots of conversations I was having with people who were finding it hard to pivot and build portfolio careers and often felt alone and unsupported. I also noticed more fractional marketers turning up at events, but there was no dedicated space for them to connect and collaborate. Over time, all these conversations highlighted a real gap—people needed a place designed for them and where they truly belonged.

Q: What challenges did you face while building this idea, and how did you overcome them?

Jeremy: The biggest challenge was that this wasn’t my day job—I was building it alongside everything else. Like many people, I could easily have put it off, but I made a personal commitment to start small. I wanted to make a difference. The first step was simply creating a LinkedIn group and inviting a few people. There was no financial pressure, just a strong sense of purpose. I wanted to help fractional marketers connect, collaborate, and build sustainable careers they could be proud of.

Q: What has been your proudest milestone so far?

Jeremy: We’ve grown to over 700 members in just three months purely through word of mouth. We’ve also hosted three community events focused on development and knowledge sharing—two in-person events in central London with about 65 people at each, and one virtual session with over 100 attendees from different locations across the world. To go from nothing to something in such a short space of time that means so much to so many people is incredibly rewarding.

Q: Are you a solopreneur or do you work with a team?

Jeremy: My day job is as a fractional marketer through my company, RocketJam, where I help businesses with branding, growth, product launches, UK market entry and transformation. For The Slice Network, I have a wonderful co-founder, Catherine Nichols. She’s an inspiring leader and an incredibly strong marketer. We also work with small teams of volunteers from the network to bring our events and initiatives to life, as well as commercial partners who are increasingly drawn to our mission.

Q: What are your thoughts on women in leadership today?

Jeremy: I’ve seen many talented women put their careers on hold to start families, and fractional work changes that equation. It gives women the freedom to stay in the game without diluting their influence. My co-founder, Catherine Nichols, a mother of three under eight and an exceptional marketing leader, is proof of what’s possible when the system and marketplace flex instead of forcing women to choose. Many parents in our community, especially mums, are thriving because this model creates space for genuine balance. Championing a path where women are the pilots of their careers is really important to me. I have an ambitious 17-year-old daughter and a deeply purpose-driven wife, and I want to be a great role model.

Q: What message would you like to share with future women leaders and entrepreneurs?

Jeremy: Your destiny is in your own hands. The world is full of possibility, but you must continually invest in yourself. Personal growth often falls to the bottom of our priority list, but it’s essential—especially in a fast-changing world shaped by technology and AI. But independence demands discipline, and investing in yourself is non-negotiable if you want to move forward.

Q: What is your personal idea of success?

Jeremy: If you love what you do, work doesn’t feel like work—it feels like purpose, it feels like meaning, it feels like living. Success is doing the best work of your life in a way that feels meaningful to you. But no more do you need to commit to a single employer to achieve this. Life is short, and it’s important to live it on your own terms.

“If we put community first, everyone rises together – like a rising tide truly raises all boats, it can lift every heart and every mind. And in our case, every career.”
