Q&A with Ian Knowlson
Ian, what inspired your transition from sales leadership into coaching?
I spent most of my early career in sales, eventually becoming a National Sales Director for Hays, a global recruitment business. But after my father passed away in 1998, I took time to reflect on life through therapy. Over five years, I realized the things that had once motivated me no longer did. That period sparked my decision to leave corporate leadership and focus on coaching — helping others grow both personally and professionally.
What were some of the challenges you faced when establishing yourself as a coach?
There were plenty. Initially, I leaned into my existing network, which gave me a strong foundation. But soon after, government schemes I worked under were canceled overnight — I lost around £50,000 worth of forward orders just like that. Then Brexit hit, impacting the recruitment sector significantly, followed by the global pandemic. But as entrepreneurs and coaches, we adapt. My business evolved — today, I work with clients worldwide, from Australia and Japan to North America and Europe.
Do you have a team supporting your work today?
Yes, though it’s a small, associate-based team. I have two people who assist with marketing, and a few trusted associates who deliver training and coaching alongside me. Together, we run programs for both small businesses and large organizations. For instance, we’ve delivered leadership training for the Mawson Group — one of the UK’s top recruitment businesses — supporting nearly 100 future leaders within their global teams.
Looking back, is there an achievement you’re particularly proud of?
Absolutely. Beyond business growth, it’s the impact we’ve had on individuals that matters most. I’ve received heartfelt messages from people saying our coaching changed their lives, their careers — even saved their marriages by enhancing self-awareness and emotional intelligence. We focus on behavior change, not just knowledge transfer. That deep, personal transformation is what I’m most proud of.
What are your thoughts on women in leadership today?
I’m delighted to say at least half the participants in our programs are women or individuals identifying beyond traditional gender norms. Their contributions have been outstanding — I believe women naturally bring empathy and strong critical reasoning to leadership. Diversity enriches teams, businesses, and society. I advocate for leadership environments where every voice, regardless of background, is heard and valued. Inclusion isn’t optional — it’s essential for success.
Finally, what advice would you give to aspiring women leaders and entrepreneurs?
Right now, the biggest shift we’re facing is artificial intelligence. I’ve witnessed industries evolve — from the arrival of mobile phones to LinkedIn. But AI is different — it’s a game-changer for talent acquisition, leadership, and customer experience. My advice? Embrace this change. AI won’t replace people, but those who integrate it effectively will thrive. Those who don’t adapt may not be here in five years. Future leaders must be proactive, curious, and ready to reshape their organizations for an AI-driven world.
“Leadership is about more than strategy — it’s about understanding people, building inclusive teams, and helping others unlock their full potential.”
