Evelyn Parker’s story is one of purpose, resilience, and leadership rooted in authenticity. As a biracial Afro-Latina woman with over 23 years of experience in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB), she has made it her life’s mission to educate, empower, and inspire others to embrace differences while fostering unity. From being a teen mom to becoming an award-winning Chief Diversity and Culture Officer, Evelyn’s journey is a testament to what it means to turn personal challenges into platforms for change. Humans of Fuzia celebrates Evelyn for her unwavering advocacy in creating inclusive spaces and her commitment to mentoring young women worldwide.
Q: What inspired you to begin your journey in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion?
Evelyn: It all started when I was part of an internship program in high school. Out of seventy students, I was one of only two minorities, and I felt that representation was missing. That experience planted the seed for my career in DEI. Back then, it was called “culture work,” but the essence was the same—helping people understand that our differences make us stronger. Over the past 23 years, I’ve created programs and trainings to show that we can have different ideas and still coexist with respect.
Q: What were some challenges you faced along the way, and how did you overcome them?
Evelyn: One of the biggest challenges has been resistance to change. Sometimes organizations say they want inclusion, but when the work begins, their actions don’t align with their words. I’ve learned to navigate those spaces by staying authentic—advocating for myself and for others who may not look like me. Authenticity builds trust, and that’s where true change begins.
Q: Do you work independently, or do you have a team supporting you?
Evelyn: I currently lead a team as the Chief Diversity and Culture Officer, and I also run my own business with a shared group of professionals who collaborate with me on various DEIB projects.
Q: What are some of the milestones you’re most proud of?
Evelyn: I’m honored to have been recognized among the Top 100 in the World for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in both 2024 and 2025. I also received the Woman of Excellence Award for my leadership and community advocacy. But beyond titles, my proudest moments are when I see the impact—when someone says my work helped them feel seen or valued.
Q: How do you view women’s role in leadership today?
Evelyn: I think women are absolutely rocking it! We’re not just stepping into leadership roles; we’re redefining them. Twenty years ago, most leadership positions were held by men, but today women are earning degrees, leading businesses, raising families, and doing it all with grace and strength. Leadership isn’t just about titles—it’s also about leading at home, in communities, and in the workplace. We are paving the way and leading by example.
Q: What message would you share with aspiring women leaders and entrepreneurs?
Evelyn: Stay true to who you are and to your values. Roles may shift, but your integrity and authenticity are what will carry you through. When you stay aligned with your purpose, you’ll always end up where you’re meant to be.
Q: Have you ever faced imposter syndrome? How did you deal with it?
Evelyn: Absolutely. As a biracial Afro-Latina woman, I often felt I had to adjust how I spoke or presented myself to make others comfortable. But I learned that sharing who I am—saying, “Yes, I talk fast, I use my hands, and that’s part of me”—helps people relax and connect. Authenticity disarms assumptions and creates space for learning.
Q: What’s your personal and professional definition of success?
Evelyn: My motto is “Small change, big wins.” Success doesn’t have to be grand. It’s about small acts of kindness, a thoughtful conversation, or a gesture that brightens someone’s day. If I can make someone smile or feel valued, that’s success to me—because small actions can create huge ripple effects.
“Small change, big wins — that’s how we transform lives, one act of kindness at a time.”
