What were your initial years of growing up like? Tell us about your life before starting your corporate journey/venture/initiative.

My early years were filled with joy as the first grandchild in a large family, but everything changed when the political climate in Ethiopia deteriorated. A military coup turned my homeland upside down, leading to an ugly battle for power with the backing of the Soviet government. My father, hunted for failing to maintain his nationalized business, fled to protect us. My mother, pregnant with my third sibling, and my siblings and I were forced into hiding before we eventually escaped the country. As the oldest, I took on significant responsibilities during this tumultuous time. We managed to cross the border from Ethiopia to Sudan by seeking shelter with strangers and traveling at night to avoid detection. After three challenging years as refugees, we arrived in the United States, where my father awaited us. Landing in Minnesota was a moment of relief; we were safe and free. We enrolled in school and began learning English, navigating the challenges of assimilating into a new culture while feeling different. Fortunately, I found friends who embraced me and made me feel like I belonged. This journey has profoundly shaped who I am today and fuels my passion for education and helping others thrive.

Every industry that is now a large-scale, top-notch business once started as a small idea in the minds of entrepreneurs. What was that idea or motivation that made you start your business /initiative? What motivated you within to say YES, go for it?”?

Proverbs Leadership Institute (PLI) was born from my 25-year career in global HR leadership and my journey as an immigrant. I recognized that workplace culture and leadership development, while crucial for organizational success, were often overshadowed by day-to-day HR operations. PLI allows me to focus exclusively on these transformative areas, leveraging my unique perspective to offer specialized insights and strategies. The work of executive coaching, organizational development, and board-related talent strategy represents an opportunity to scale the impact of strong organizational cultures and effective leadership beyond what was possible in traditional HR roles. It’s a platform to create more inclusive, productive, and fulfilling work environments, driven by my passion for empowering leaders and transforming workplaces. Ultimately, PLI embodies my commitment to making a substantial, far-reaching impact in the modern business landscape.
