Meet Derek Duzoglou, a mechanical engineer and circular economy architect whose passion for sustainability has been transforming communities across the globe. As the founder of D-Squared Engineering, Derek has dedicated nearly two decades to developing efficient, eco-friendly systems that empower underserved regions with access to essentials like clean water, energy, and food. Humans of Fuzia is proud to feature Derek’s story to inspire our 5M+ strong community, reaffirming our mission of celebrating changemakers who believe in the spirit of He for She and She for She—working together for a sustainable and inclusive world.
Q: Derek, could you share a bit about your background and what inspired your journey into engineering and sustainability?
A: I come from a family of engineers—both my grandparents, my father, and several uncles and cousins. But for me, it was never about following tradition. From a young age, I loved taking things apart to understand how they worked and how to make them more efficient. That passion evolved into a career focused on sustainability—essentially, efficiency optimization on a global scale. After losing my job during the 2008 economic downturn, I began consulting and soon realized how I could use my skills to give back to the environment and improve lives.
Q: Tell us more about D-Squared Engineering and the work you’re doing through your containerized platforms.
A: Our mission is to bring essential infrastructure—like water, energy, food, waste processing, and commerce—to remote or underserved communities. We build these systems within shipping containers, making them portable and easily deployable. Currently, we’re focusing on South Florida, the Caribbean, and parts of Latin America—regions that often face challenges due to hurricanes or limited access to resources. For example, we’re working with a school in Jamaica to provide clean water, renewable energy, and updated rainwater harvesting systems to improve both living and learning conditions for the children there.
Q: That’s incredible. You’ve met many people through your work—could you share about any women who have deeply influenced your journey?
A: Absolutely. First and foremost, my mother—she’s been a rock, offering constant support and wisdom. Another person who profoundly impacted me is Michelle Estevez, a local community leader and philanthropist. After the 2010 earthquakes in Haiti, I joined her on a mission to deliver clothing and supplies. Witnessing how her compassion and determination changed lives opened my eyes to the true power of giving. It showed me that even the smallest efforts can create lasting change when driven by genuine passion.
Q: What are your thoughts on women in leadership and the importance of gender inclusion in professional spaces?
A: I’ve had the privilege of working with many incredible women in leadership—professors, board members, and industry professionals—who bring extraordinary knowledge and empathy to their work. Their professionalism and insights have not only shaped my perspective but have also strengthened the organizations they’re part of. Inclusion is essential; when diverse voices come together, innovation thrives.
Q: We’re witnessing a revolution with Artificial Intelligence. How do you see AI impacting your field?
A: AI is a powerful tool—if used wisely. It doesn’t replace human intelligence; it enhances it. Just as CAD revolutionized engineering decades ago, AI can expand our capabilities when guided by human wisdom and experience. The key is to balance technology with empathy and creativity so that progress truly serves humanity.
Q: Finally, what message would you like to share with aspiring entrepreneurs and changemakers?
A: Focus on your passion—don’t chase money, chase impact. When you work on something you love, it doesn’t feel like work. The right people and opportunities will find you along the way. Use your skills to uplift others; there’s no greater reward than seeing your efforts create a positive ripple in the world.
“Focus on impact over income—because when you follow your passion with purpose, abundance follows naturally.” – Derek Duzoglou
