Delores “Dee” Thompson: Never Giving Up, No Matter Where Life Begins

Delores “Dee” Thompson

Delores “Dee” Thompson’s story is one of resilience, faith, and quiet determination. From becoming a mother at 17 to rising as a senior executive in the U.S. federal government, Dee’s journey reflects what’s possible when courage meets persistence. Humans of Fuzia is proud to feature her story as a reminder to women everywhere that setbacks don’t define us—our perseverance does. Her experiences deeply resonate with our 5M+ global community committed to uplifting women, while standing firmly for She for She and He for She.

What first inspired you to believe in perseverance and keep going, even when life felt overwhelming?
As a teenager, I read Yes, I Can by Sammy Davis Jr., and it stayed with me. His story showed me that no matter how many challenges you face, you keep moving forward. Around that time, I became a mother at 17. I knew I had to build a future not just for myself, but for my son. That belief—never give up—became my foundation.

You’ve spoken about being deeply introverted early in life. How did you overcome that?
I didn’t overcome it overnight. I remember sitting in my car outside my college on the last day of registration, unable to get out because I was so shy. But I pushed myself. That moment taught me something powerful: courage isn’t loud—it’s quiet decisions we make even when we’re afraid.

Your career path spans law, government service, leadership, and now coaching. How did that evolve?
Honestly, I followed curiosity more than a plan. I loved learning. Opportunities came because I stayed open—whether it was law school, federal clerkships, or leadership roles. I didn’t chase titles; I chased purpose. When something aligned with my values, I leaned in.

What role did mentorship play in your journey?
Mentorship changed everything. Someone believed in me before I fully believed in myself. That’s why I’m passionate about mentoring and coaching now. We all need someone who sees our potential even when we can’t.

You balanced an intense career with caregiving for your parents and personal loss. How did you stay grounded?
Faith, family, and acceptance. Life doesn’t stop being hard just because you’re successful. I learned that strength also means knowing when to pause, grieve, and heal. Through it all, I reminded myself: keep moving forward.

Why did you decide to become a coach after retirement?
Coaching is something I’ve always done naturally. I can’t ignore potential when I see it. After retirement, I wanted to intentionally help people—especially women—step into their leadership, confidence, and purpose with clarity and courage.

What advice would you give women who feel stuck or underestimated?
You don’t have to be fearless. You just have to be willing. Be curious. Be open. And never—ever—give up on yourself.

“Life will challenge you, but you always have a choice—to stop, or to move forward. I choose to move forward, every time.” — Delores “Dee” Thompson
