Q: What inspired you to begin your journey as a career coach?
Amanda: I was in a national director role that looked impressive on paper but left me unfulfilled. While working on a project with career centers at a university, I realized these were “my people.” Their kindness, thoughtfulness, and the tangible impact of their work showed me that career coaching was not just practical but transformational. That moment was my turning point. I decided I wanted to help people at later stages in their careers gain clarity, pivot with confidence, and create more fulfilling professional lives.
Q: What challenges did you face when starting out?
Amanda: The biggest challenge was building a client base. Initially, working for other organizations gave me the chance to refine my coaching skills while earning an income. Over time, many clients remembered me—not the organization—and referred others my way. Today, nearly all of my clients come through referrals or organic online discovery. I feel very fortunate to have reached this point.
Q: Do you run your business solo or with a team?
Amanda: I’m a solopreneur by choice. I’ve managed teams before, but what I love now is being directly connected to my clients and doing the work myself. Occasionally, I bring in subcontractors for tasks I don’t enjoy as much, but for the most part, my joy comes from personally guiding people through career transformations.
Q: What milestones are you most proud of?
Amanda: A major milestone was reaching the point where I no longer needed subcontracting work and could fully sustain my business with my own clients. Another beautiful marker of success has been when clients refer their partners—sometimes even investing a second time—because they find the coaching so valuable. That’s when I knew the work I do truly makes a difference.
Q: What’s your perspective on women in leadership today?
Amanda: I believe women bring a unique, creative, and community-driven approach to leadership. Historically, many women had to adapt to more masculine leadership styles, but as we see more women in leadership, we’re beginning to embrace inclusive, innovative, and collaborative ways of leading. This shift doesn’t just benefit organizations—it has the power to transform entire communities.
Q: What advice would you give aspiring women leaders and entrepreneurs?
Amanda: You don’t need to quit your job right away to pursue your dream. Start small, carve out time, prototype your ideas, and test whether it’s truly what you want. Then, when you’re ready, make the leap. Too often, people think entrepreneurship requires an all-or-nothing risk. I believe in building steadily until you feel grounded enough to commit fully.
Q: What’s your personal definition of success?
Amanda: For me, success is about balance—serving others in meaningful ways while also having time for my family. It’s about being a good mom, partner, and friend, while making an impact in people’s lives through my work. Success looks different for everyone, but for me, it’s the ability to make positive change in the world without compromising on what matters most at home.
