Steve Hoskinson: Healing the World Through Service, Compassion, and Conscious Leadership

Steve Hoskinson

Steve Hoskinson’s journey is rooted in compassion, service, and a deep belief that healing the world begins with healing ourselves. Through decades of working with underserved communities and building a global learning ecosystem, Steve’s work speaks to purpose-driven leadership—especially in empowering women to rise, lead, and thrive. Humans of Fuzia features his story for its quiet strength and powerful reminder that success is measured not by profit, but by the lives we touch and uplift.

What inspired you to begin your entrepreneurial journey?
It began with a moment of realization while I was working at an inner-city health clinic in Washington, D.C., serving refugees, people without homes, and individuals living on the streets. Many were struggling with mental health challenges, and I realized I needed deeper tools and skills to truly support them. That led me to study clinical psychology, but more importantly, it pushed me to explore the deeper questions people ask—about meaning, purpose, and whether being of service to others can also be a path to healing oneself. That realization became the foundation of everything we do today.

What challenges did you face while building this mission-driven work?
One of the biggest challenges has been balancing service with sustainability. Our mission is focused on supporting underserved populations, especially women, but that work still requires financial resources. Navigating the tension between commercial needs and genuine service is ongoing. The profit motive can be distracting, but we constantly remind ourselves that success is not about accumulation—it’s about relationships, love, and how we show up for others in everyday life.

What has been your proudest milestone so far?
Seeing our senior members grow into teachers themselves has been incredibly meaningful. We’ve invested deeply in mentoring people, and now watching them step into leadership roles with confidence, skill, and compassion is deeply fulfilling. It’s a joy to see this work carried forward by people with such warm hearts and a genuine commitment to service.

Do you work alone or with a team?
I work closely with my wife, Amber Tanel, who is our Managing Director. We’re a very small team—just the two of us full-time—but our community spans over 100 countries. Amber coordinates everything behind the scenes, allowing me to focus on teaching and conversations like this one. It’s a blessing to live, work, and envision the future together.

How has your community grown over the years?
Each year, new cohorts join our programs, and we support them throughout their personal and professional development journey. From foundational learning to senior teaching roles, there’s a clear, nurturing path. Our growth has been organic and beautifully diverse, with members from different cultures, identities, and parts of the world—including India. That diversity enriches the entire community.

What are your thoughts on women and leadership today?
The gender pay gap remains a serious issue, often worsened by the time women take out of the workforce for caregiving. Structural support—especially around childcare and re-entry into work—is essential. Women make up the majority of our community and leadership, particularly women of color. Supporting women isn’t just equity—it’s justice. When women are empowered, communities and futures are transformed.

What message would you like to share with aspiring women leaders and entrepreneurs?
Congratulations for finding your way into spaces of solidarity. The relational strength and collective wisdom women bring is extraordinary. Many believe the future of our planet rests largely in women’s hands—and I agree. When more resources, trust, and opportunity are placed with women, the world becomes a better place for everyone.

What does success mean to you—personally and professionally?
Success is unified for us. It’s found in witnessing others step into their creativity, compassion, and purpose. Our joy comes from supporting others in their growth. That quality of heartfulness—being moved by others’ success—is, to me, the truest measure of success.

“The real success in life is found in compassion—when your joy comes from seeing others flourish.”
