Nikita Shahamat: Helping women heal, birth, and rise beyond trauma

Nikita Shahamat

Meet Nikita Shahamat, a Toronto-based doula and hypnotherapist whose work is rooted in empathy, healing, and transformation. Having faced profound loss early in life, Nikita turned her pain into purpose by dedicating herself to helping women through childbirth, postpartum recovery, and emotional healing. Her journey—from losing her parents as a child to becoming a fierce advocate for women’s mental and physical well-being—embodies strength, compassion, and resilience.

Humans of Fuzia is featuring Nikita because her story reflects what our 5-million-strong community stands for: women and allies uplifting one another through shared experiences and support. Her voice encourages every woman to reclaim her power, rewrite her story, and inspire others to do the same.

Q&A Interview:

Q: Nikita, can you share a little about where your story begins?
A: I was born in Chennai, India, but moved to Canada when I was six after losing both of my parents. That was my first big life challenge. I went through a lot of grief and confusion, and I didn’t always get the support I needed. Growing up, I knew I wanted to help others, especially children and women, so my dream of helping people started very early.

Q: What led you into becoming a doula?
A: My path evolved over time. I once wanted to be a pediatrician, then a journalist, then a social worker—but life led me to birth work. About eight years ago, I became a doula. Working closely with women during pregnancy and childbirth, I witnessed their strength, their vulnerability, and also the trauma many experience in hospitals where their voices aren’t always heard. I felt an intense need to protect and empower them during one of the most sacred experiences of their lives.

Q: You mentioned seeing trauma in birth experiences. What did you notice, and how did that change your approach?
A: So many women experience trauma without realizing it. They’re often not treated with respect or autonomy during delivery. I started assisting with home births, and the difference was profound. When women feel safe, supported, and in control, their bodies respond differently—the births are smoother, their recovery is faster, and they bond more deeply with their babies. That experience transformed how I viewed birth—it’s not just physical, it’s deeply emotional and psychological.

Q: You’ve also transitioned into hypnotherapy. What inspired that shift?
A: Around 2020, I was struggling with my own anxiety. Hypnotherapy changed my life—it helped me revisit painful memories and reframe them in empowering ways. I realized how powerful the subconscious mind is and how quickly healing can happen when we access it. Now, I’m integrating hypnotherapy and EFT tapping into my work to help women release emotional blocks, heal trauma, and rediscover peace within themselves.

Q: That’s beautiful. What drives your mission today?
A: My mission is to help women remember their power—to validate their emotions and remind them they’re more than their past. Whether it’s through birth work, hypnotherapy, or mental health awareness, I want to help women feel safe in their bodies and confident in their futures. It’s about helping them realize they can create a life beyond pain or fear.

Q: What have been some of the challenges in your journey?
A: Honestly, balancing everything—running my doula practice, building my hypnotherapy programs, and taking care of myself. I also want to grow my reach, connect with more women who need this support, and raise awareness about postpartum mental health. But I’m learning to take it one day at a time, trusting that every small step counts.

Q: As you move toward this next phase, what are your aspirations?
A: By the end of 2026, I want to fully transition into hypnotherapy and mental wellness work while still supporting mothers in their postpartum journey. I want to create spaces—both online and offline—where women can heal, learn, and thrive together.

Q: What message would you like to share with women who read your story?
A: Every person has a story, and every story has power. You don’t have to stay stuck in your pain or believe you’re a victim of your circumstances. You are the hero of your own story—and when you start seeing yourself that way, everything begins to change. Healing yourself is also how you inspire others to heal.

“Becoming the hero is more than gaining your inner strength—it’s about inspiring others to find theirs.”
