Nicole’s experiences remind us why lifting each other up—through He for She and She for She—creates ripples of hope and transformation for women and changemakers everywhere.
Q: Nicole, what inspired you to start your entrepreneurial journey?
Nicole: In December 2022, I experienced two major life shifts within just nine days—I was laid off from my role at a tech startup and diagnosed with breast cancer. As a single mom, unemployed and suddenly facing a life-threatening illness, I had to find a way forward. Starting my business, People Solutions Group, gave me a way to generate income and, equally important, something to focus on besides my illness. I’m grateful to be cancer-free today, and those early days taught me the true power of community and resilience.
Q: Who do you primarily work with through People Solutions Group?
Nicole: I work with business owners on their people and culture strategies, and I also coach individuals—especially those new to HR or transitioning into it. Sometimes it’s executives, other times people shifting careers. I find joy in helping them discover what’s already inside them and in teaching them tools and approaches they can continue to use beyond our work together.
Q: What impact do you see in your clients after working with you?
Nicole: Many of my clients gain confidence in their skills and clarity in their career direction. Sometimes it’s as simple as reframing how they communicate their strengths or introducing them to tools like ChatGPT for improving their LinkedIn profiles. I don’t want to make myself indispensable—I want them to leave with lasting skills and renewed belief in themselves.
Q: Have you ever struggled with imposter syndrome? How do you handle it?
Nicole: Absolutely. As an executive, a mother, and even as an entrepreneur, imposter syndrome shows up. My advice is: stop applying for the job after you’ve already got it. If you were hired, your expertise and input are needed. Go into meetings prepared, ask good questions, and stay curious. Curiosity often shows more intelligence than simply speaking to be heard. And if something doesn’t work out, adopt a mindset of continuous improvement—try, learn, and try again.
Q: Looking back, what’s something you wish you had done differently as an entrepreneur?
Nicole: I wish I had been more proactive about asking for help and sharing what I do. Too often, entrepreneurs become the “best kept secret” in their own networks. People genuinely want to help, but they can’t if they don’t know what you do or how you make an impact. Sharing stories about your work and the breakthroughs you’ve helped create not only spreads your passion but also helps others understand how they can support you.
Q: What challenges have you faced in building your business?
Nicole: Business development has been a challenge, especially because HR professionals are conditioned to put others first without expecting recognition. As an introvert, I sometimes find it hard to “sell” myself. I’ve learned to focus on being a giver—building relationships, helping others, and letting referrals and word-of-mouth amplify my work.
Q: How do you define success personally and professionally?
Nicole: For me, success is having the freedom and autonomy to help as many people as possible. Professionally, it’s about making businesses and individuals better through the unique skills I bring. Personally, it’s about flexibility—being present for my daughter, especially as she enters her senior year of high school. I spent years traveling for work and missing moments. Now, I value both quality and quantity of time with my family.
Q: Tell us about your podcast, Amplify Your Signal.
Nicole: I launched Amplify Your Signal to give a platform to those in job transition or who have been laid off. Too often, their stories get lost in LinkedIn comments or fleeting posts. I wanted to use my network to amplify their voices, share their journeys, and connect them with opportunities. It has been deeply rewarding, and I’m excited about expanding its reach to a wider audience.
“In life and business, it’s not about making yourself indispensable—it’s about helping others realize the strength and potential they already carry within them.” — Nicole Roberts
