If your business could have a mascot, what would it be and why?
My business mascot would be Wonder Woman because I live and work by the principles of integrity, truth, and honor. Plus, she has been a role model for me since I was a little girl!
What strategies do you employ to maintain a healthy work-life balance while running your own business?
I try to take walks regularly and spend time with my nieces and nephews whenever possible. These activities help me let go of work stresses and focus on the moment. I maintain a healthy perspective by spending a lot of time meditating and being introspective, connecting with my honest self and starting change from the inside. Travel is also a passion; even if I’m not going somewhere new, I’m researching or exploring my next trip.
When faced with unexpected detours on your business path, how do you pivot with grace and resilience, showing fellow women entrepreneurs the way forward?
Unexpected challenges can really throw one off their game. I’ve certainly had my fair share of detours, setbacks, and mistakes. One thing I’ve learned—and continue to learn with every fall—is to accept the feelings that come along with those events. Resisting natural human emotions can add stress at a time when we need all our faculties and best thinking! So, I do my best to connect with my feelings and move through them. I talk with people who know and love me and can build me up, and I always seek others’ honest input. I may not always follow their advice, but one never knows what can be learned from multiple viewpoints.
Remember that it’s not falling down that determines who we are; it is how we get up. And there’s no time limit on finding and pursuing one’s dreams—old or new. The rules that we may think others expect us to follow are irrelevant. I try my hardest to live by my inner compass, which provides me with the motivation to keep moving forward, smarter and stronger.
And when all else fails, I ask my amazing mom to lend me her faith!
How do you measure the success of your business beyond financial metrics, such as customer satisfaction or community engagement?
As an executive coach, the most important measure of my success is if my clients feel they have achieved their goals. Second after that is if I’ve learned something that will help me be a better coach in service of my clients. At this stage in my career, I feel successful if I’m enjoying myself—life is too short not to enjoy what you do.
Can you share a memorable moment where you witnessed significant growth or transformation in your business, illustrating the impact of your services/products?
One of my favorite moments when running my own independent consulting and coaching business was when a colleague came to me and asked to use my leadership framework as the basis for a workshop on leading change for a CEO and the executive leadership team. It was a validation of my thinking and approach and offered the opportunity to be creative in designing a bespoke experience that left leaders with new thinking and the possibility of mindset shifts.
What role do you believe mentorship plays in the success of small businesses, and how have mentors influenced your own entrepreneurial journey?
I personally believe mentorship comes in a lot of different forms. Where I learned the most is from colleagues with whom I work and collaborate on projects, and from friends who share their experiences with me. I don’t think I could succeed without collaborating with my colleagues, getting smarter from them, and by working with them, and from hearing about how others have moved through their own challenges.
What’s your work all about, and how does it make a difference in the world?
My ethos for life is how to grow and learn and become the better version of myself, and that’s what I try to help others who choose to embark on a growth journey do in their lives as organizational leaders.
