Q: What inspired you to start your entrepreneurial journey?
Candy: Honestly, I didn’t plan to be a business owner. It started when a friend who knew my background as a full-charge bookkeeper asked for help with her husband’s business. I initially resisted, but after months of her asking, I finally agreed. Once I got my business licenses and software, I realized it didn’t make sense to serve just one client — so I started taking on more. Eventually, my husband encouraged me to quit my job and pursue my business full-time. I took the leap in 2004, and I’ve never looked back.
Q: Do you work solo or have a team supporting you?
Candy: I currently have a team of 11, most of whom work part-time. Many are parents who value flexible hours or older adults who want to stay active after retirement. We’re fully remote now and spread across multiple U.S. states. It’s been rewarding to create a flexible, supportive environment that works for everyone.
Q: What were some of the biggest challenges you faced in building your business?
Candy: In the beginning, I struggled with things like pricing, marketing, and self-confidence. I didn’t have a business background, and since I wasn’t a CPA, I faced skepticism from some professionals. I had to overcome imposter syndrome and learn as I went — joining business networks, attending presentations, and finding mentors. Over time, I built a strong support system and realized that learning from others and helping others in return is key to long-term success.
Q: What are your thoughts on women in leadership and empowerment today?
Candy: I believe women have come a long way, but many still doubt themselves. It’s important to recognize our worth and lead with confidence. My advice is simple — follow your passion, not pressure. Don’t do something because someone else thinks you should. When you pursue what truly drives you, you’ll make a lasting impact and find fulfillment. Money follows when you’re doing meaningful work.
Q: What does success mean to you — personally and professionally?
Candy: Personally, success is being happily married for 33 years, raising two wonderful children, and enjoying time with my four grandchildren. Family means everything to me. I also believe in taking time for myself — whether it’s crocheting, baking bread, or doing puzzles.
Professionally, success means helping entrepreneurs find both time and financial freedom. Many start businesses for freedom but end up overwhelmed. I love helping them create systems that make their companies profitable and sustainable — ones that can run smoothly even when they take time off. That’s true success to me.
