What were your initial years of growing up like? Tell us about your life before starting your corporate journey/venture/initiative.
I was surrounded by boys because I am the only granddaughter in my generation of grandchildren. I was outspoken, focused, driven, smart, witty, secretly competitive and shy. I knew that one day I would be the owner of a business and I would be successful. I have always driven myself to be successful at all my endeavors and that began when I was a child. Life was not always easy or without challenges however I always found a way to strive forward and succeed on my terms which has been a blessing that has led me to where I am today.
Every industry that is now a large-scale, top-notch business once started as a small idea in the minds of entrepreneurs. What was that idea or motivation that made you start your business /initiative? What motivated you within to say YES, go for it!
The motivation for starting my first business was so that I could have a steady paycheck. I have an electrical engineering degree and when I graduated from college with that degree, I could not get a job as an electrical engineer in Silicon Valley because I was the wrong gender, a woman that would be entering a male dominated industry and working with men that were my father’s age. So I decided that if I could not get a job in my field of study and choice, I would start my own business. I started the first woman-owned, minority owned telecommunications installation company in the United States with my husband in 1990 and I have never looked back. It was one of the greatest decisions I have made in my life and it has been extremely rewarding.
Would you like to share with our young budding women entrepreneurs the change you would like to see in the world if given an opportunity?
I would like to see more women in key positions in the world of business, especially within the Fortune 500 and 1000 companies. I would like to see women around the world unite with the goal of changing the world to make it a better place for all. I would like to see more women take charge of their lives instead of defaulting to what men dictate to women what they think women should be doing. Women are the change agents to make the world a better place and now is the time for women around the world to unite.
Women are a growing force in the workplaces worldwide, standing shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts. There are cracks in glass ceilings everywhere, with many women breaking through to carve out a space right at the top of the pyramid. What are your thoughts about women leadership today?
I believe that we still do not have an equal playing field and that more women need to have the opportunity to not only break through the glass ceiling but to bust the glass ceiling wide open.
What’s the most important thing you have learned in your personal life and professional journey? What is your personal motto in life?
The most important thing I have learned in both my professional and personal journey is to always trust my intuition. It is wise, always correct and never leads me astray. My intuition always leads and guides me to my highest and best good. My personal motto in life is: Positivity leads to positive thoughts, a positive state of mind, body, spirit and emotional wellbeing, prosperity and abundance. When we live in a state of positivity we allow the Divine to work magic that we desire in our lives.
With your grit and determination, you are making a considerable impact, breaking through, and serving as role models for many budding entrepreneurs. What would you want to say to our young women leaders/audience reading this?
Never give up on your dreams. There will be roadblocks, challenges that seem impossible, there will be heartbreaks and difficulties. There will also be moments in your life that take your breath away and fill you with happiness, joy, peace, love and gratitude. In the midst of us traveling on our paths to Bliss, know, believe and have faith that whatever you want to do and whatever you desire to have is possible when you learn to ebb and flow in the abundant energy and waves of life. Nothing stays the same which is why the Divine gives a new day every day. It is our opportunity to ride the beautiful waves of life and to create what we truly want and desire to have. Nothing is impossible. Everything you desire is Possible. Just Believe!
