What were your initial years of growing up like? Tell us about your life before starting your corporate journey/venture/initiative.
Growing up predominantly in Melbourne, Australia during the 70s and 80s, under the care of British parents, Emma Doyle’s early life was marked by a cross-continental experience. Fluctuating between the UK and Australia during primary school, Emma’s outgoing nature emerged from adapting to new environments and making friends swiftly. This lifestyle introduced her to diverse sports like rounders, soccer, cricket, netball, and Australian football, fostering a love for sports. Settling in Melbourne in 1985, Emma began her tennis journey, showcasing her natural athleticism across various ball sports. However, her standout moment arrived at 14, when she stumbled into tennis coaching, igniting a passion that would shape her life. Coaching became a profound calling, allowing Emma to inspire, improve, and impact individuals—an enduring mission.
In 1994, a pivotal question from David Parkin, her University Coaching Course Coordinator, transformed her direction. “Emma, do you really want to become the best coach that you can be?” Emma’s resolute response led to a life-altering choice—to explore her playing potential. Embarking on a journey to Nashville, Tennessee, she played division 1 US collegiate tennis for Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), a rewarding experience that combined sport and education.
Her journey evolved into representing Australia as a world team coach of junior tennis teams and working for Tennis Australia as a Coach Developer. In 2013, Emma embarked on an international journey, aspiring to be a speaker. Despite challenges, including visa limitations, she persevered, expanding her focus to corporate coaching and workshops. Currently, her mission revolves around cultivating coaching cultures in workplaces and developing leaders. Her goal is to harness energy and empower people to take authentic action and see real possibilities unleashing human potential.
Guided by her parents’ encouragement to seize opportunities, Emma’s horizons continue to expand in the tech, manufacturing, and engineering worlds. Her experiences led her to Colorado, where she thrives as a speaker and coach, with a special interest in empowering women (one of the greatest under-utilized resources int the world) to live the best story of their lives. Dream big, think fast, and take action!
Through her journey, Emma’s role models and their advice have been pivotal guides:
- Judy Murray, renowned for her coaching prowess, emphasized the power of creating a learning environment that lets the activity do the teaching for you.
- Billie Jean King’s wisdom “Pressure is a privilege” resonated deeply, empowering Emma to view challenges as opportunities for growth.
- Becky Magnotta’s counsel “Seek before you speak” underscored the importance of listening, understanding, and connecting authentically before imparting insights.
- Drawing from Peter McCraw’s mentorship, Emma adopted the mindset of transformation: “Who do you need to become, to get to where you want to go?” This propelled her journey of evolution and servant leadership.
- Inspired by Roger Crawford, she internalized that execution beats mere talent, aligning her focus on delivering impactful results through her coaching.
- Claude Silver, an emotional optimist, introduced the concept that “Your energy introduces you first,” reminding Emma of the profound influence of positive energy in building meaningful relationships that leave a lasting impression.
These influential figures have shaped Emma’s approach, reminding her to embrace learning, value pressure, listen attentively, foster personal growth, prioritize execution, and radiate positive energy—an amalgamation of wisdom that has enriched her coaching journey.
Was there any turning point in your life that changed your journey? If so, what was it? Please tell us the backstory behind it.
A significant turning point emerged in my tennis coaching career, about halfway through my journey. Having already represented Australia and worked extensively with high-performance players, I faced a pivotal realization—I could only effectively connect with half of my players, and I was exhausted. I was grappling with burnout and contemplating a career shift. Unbeknownst to me, this juncture would open a new chapter in my journey.
The catalyst for change was my realization that my coaching toolkit lacked the strategies and resources required to relate to all my players. To bridge this gap, I chose to step away from the familiar tennis court environment that had defined my career for years. This marked a significant shift in my perspective, triggering a transformation I couldn’t have foreseen at the time.
My first step toward growth was enrolling in the Diploma of Workplace and Business Coaching program offered by The Open Door Coaching Group. This thirst for understanding human development and behavior led me to pursue further studies in emotional intelligence, life coaching, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), and mBraining.
During this phase, I crossed paths with Natalie Ashdown, my co-author, and the CEO of Open Door Coaching. In a memorable coaching session, Natalie demonstrated an unparalleled coachee-centered style. Her adept questioning resembled an artist meticulously painting a canvas. Rather than imposing solutions, she masterfully guided the coachee to discover answers from within. Under her mentorship, I acquired the skill of crafting impactful questions that empower players and individuals in the corporate world to unlock their potential.
This turning point not only refined my coaching approach but also marked a shift toward a more holistic and people-centered perspective. The biggest aha moment came when I realized that I had to change who I was to bring the best in others. It set the stage for a broader journey of growth, expansion, and impactful coaching in both sports and the corporate realm.
Every industry that is now a large-scale, top-notch business once started as a small idea in the minds of entrepreneurs. What was that idea or motivation that made you start your business /initiative? What motivated you within to say “YES, go for it!”
The spark that ignited my venture was a fusion of convictions and experiences. Rooted in an unshakable belief in curiosity, I sought to carve my own path after years of navigating workplaces where bosses and managers often operated on different wavelengths. This intrinsic confidence and the urge to forge my journey spurred me to take numerous leaps of faith with several start-up businesses before landing on being the owner of Open Door Coaching USA.
Starting small was a guiding principle, driven by the understanding that great successes have humble beginnings. I embraced the power of action, adhering to the 70% principle—an ethos that urged me not to let the quest for perfection hinder progress. This approach, along with an unflinching willingness to embrace hard work, formed the backbone of my pursuit.
Seeking guidance, I recognized the value of having a coach and mentors, recognizing their ability to provide invaluable insights and guidance. Surrounding myself with a circle of five cheerleaders who knew, loved, and believed in me added a profound layer of support. These were the allies I could lean on, especially during times of frequent failures.
Embracing resilience is key. While setbacks are inevitable, I embrace each day with renewed vigor, ready to face challenges head-on. With the sun rising, I dust off disappointments and venture forward with relentless determination.
In essence, it was this amalgamation of beliefs, strategies, and a deep-seated urge for autonomy that propelled me to respond with a resounding “YES” when the call to start my businesses arose. The journey was not only about building businesses but also a testament to my conviction that with the right combination of mindset, strategy, and perseverance, a small idea can transform into a wonderful life.
Everyone has their own set of challenges when starting an entrepreneurial journey. Still, the most essential part for others to learn is how you deal with those. Would you like to share with us your challenges and your coping mechanisms?
Embarking on an entrepreneurial journey unveiled a series of challenges, each met with strategies I’ve cultivated along the way. One of the foremost hurdles was my pursuit of becoming a keynote speaker. Amidst numerous rejections in speaking applications, my father-in-law’s wisdom stood by me: “Emma, when you receive your 9th ‘no’, celebrate. Because the 10th one will be a resounding YES.” Embracing this mindset, I reframed setbacks as steps closer to success, fostering resilience in the face of rejection.
Another challenge was battling imposter syndrome, a whisper that questioned my presence among tech experts and scientists as a former tennis coach. Yet, interactions with them unveiled a profound realization—I am a people’s coach, armed with a gift for empowering effective communication through coaching strategies. I navigate these doubts by leaning on my coach, mentors, and unwavering cheerleaders, who lend me the support and guidance I need to silence the imposter within.
Time constraints emerged as a typical struggle as a solopreneur. The solution lay in outsourcing tasks where my strengths waned, reclaiming invaluable time. By entrusting non-core areas to capable hands, I discovered the power of delegation, enabling me to focus on my true strengths and propel my journey forward.
These challenges, as I’ve learned, are not obstacles but platforms for growth. My journey isn’t void of hurdles, but my coping mechanisms have transformed them into stepping stones towards my aspirations.
While the global pandemic of COVID-19 is associated primarily with adversities, it has also brought about a true boom in startups, with successful entrepreneurship in many countries. The pandemic has impacted all of us in one way or another. Would you like to share your experience on a personal and professional level?
During the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in February 2020, my professional landscape underwent a sudden transformation. All my scheduled speaking engagements were abruptly canceled, leaving me at a crossroads. In response, I temporarily returned to my roots in tennis coaching, seeking a familiar path amidst the uncertainty.
However, the pandemic inadvertently opened up unexpected opportunities for me. Driven by a desire to adapt and create, I ventured into the realm of video editing, self-teaching the skills required. This newfound expertise led to the establishment of ACEcoach.com.au, a membership site that has become a repository for over 25 years of my tennis knowledge and philosophies. This accomplishment brings me immense pride, serving as a testament to my ability to evolve in the face of adversity.
The website continues to thrive, acting as a valuable resource for tennis enthusiasts seeking guidance and insights. It’s gratifying to be able to direct individuals to this platform whenever tennis-related inquiries arise.
Interestingly, the pandemic’s effects rippled beyond my personal endeavors. The professional landscape shifted, placing a heightened emphasis on the development of coaching cultures within companies. There emerged a pressing need for strategies that nurture managers and leaders to become effective coaches, fostering an environment of growth and mentorship. This resonates strongly with the mission of Fuzia Education, a global learning community dedicated to nurturing women into future leaders.
As we reflect on the past year and a half, one prevailing lesson stands out: the importance of being in service to our fellow humans. The pandemic underscored the significance of supporting each other’s aspirations while addressing our shared fears. This philosophy aligns seamlessly with the purpose of work—to create an environment that allows human beings to flourish. The pandemic reinforced the notion that companies must actively contribute to the well-being and growth of their employees, integrating their stories into the fabric of life-work integration.
In conclusion, my pandemic journey encapsulates resilience, adaptability, and growth. From navigating the disruption of my speaking engagements to embracing video editing and now running OpenDoorCoachingUSA.com, I’ve learned that challenges can unveil hidden opportunities. The shifting professional landscape also highlighted the need for coaching cultures, echoing the ethos of Fuzia Education in nurturing future female leaders. Ultimately, the pandemic has reinforced the importance of being of service to one another, fostering an environment where individuals can truly thrive.
Your journey and your vision are very inspiring, but are there any achievements or accomplishments you would like to mention?
Alongside my professional journey, I’ve been fortunate to experience numerous personal achievements that have contributed to shaping my identity and aspirations. Family is one of my highest values, and I’m proud to be an aunt to seven wonderful nieces and nephews. Being part of their lives and watching them grow brings me immense joy and fulfillment.
In the midst of the challenges posed by the pandemic, I found a silver lining by getting married to my partner in 2020. This milestone not only marked a personal commitment but also symbolized resilience and optimism during a trying time.
Throughout my career, I’ve always embraced opportunities and taken chances, which has led to some remarkable accomplishments. One of the highlights of my journey has been representing my native country, Australia, on 20 occasions. Wearing the green and gold uniform and representing my country has been a tremendous honor, a source of pride, and a testament to my dedication and skills.
In the realm of tennis coaching, I’m proud to hold the Tennis Australia High-Performance Coaching Certification High-Performance Coaching certification. This achievement signifies my commitment to excellence in coaching and underscores the value of diversity and inclusion in traditionally male-dominated fields.
I’ve also taken my expertise and passion to international stages, speaking in front of 5,000 people and holding my own. Being able to share my insights and experiences with diverse audiences around the world has been incredibly rewarding, and I consider it a privilege to have been a voice in spaces where women are underrepresented.
Perhaps one of the most fulfilling aspects of my journey has been serving as a role model for women aspiring to become speakers and leaders. Empowering other women and inspiring them to break barriers and pursue their dreams is a responsibility I embrace wholeheartedly.
Overall, these achievements reflect not only my personal growth and accomplishments but also my commitment to making a positive impact on the world around me. They stand as a testament to the values I hold dear, including family, resilience, diversity, and the pursuit of excellence.
Would you like to share with our young budding women entrepreneurs the change you would like to see in the world if given an opportunity?
Absolutely, I would be delighted to share my insights and advice with young aspiring women entrepreneurs who are poised to make their mark on the world. The potential for positive change is immense, and here are some key principles and opportunities I believe can shape a brighter future.
Change You Can Envision: If given the opportunity, I would strive for a world where women have an equal share of influence, representation, and decision-making power across all sectors. This involves breaking down traditional barriers, advocating for diversity and inclusion, and creating environments where women’s voices are not only heard but valued. I envision a world where opportunities are abundant and barriers to success are diminished, allowing women to achieve financial independence and pursue their aspirations freely.
Advice for Budding Women Entrepreneurs:
- Get a Coach: Seek guidance and mentorship from those who have walked the path before you. A coach can provide invaluable insights, help you navigate challenges, and accelerate your learning curve.
- Invest in Education: Be a “learn-it-all” rather than a “know-it-all.” Continuously invest in your education and skill development. Embrace a curious mindset and be open to new ideas and perspectives.
- Curiosity is Key: Embrace your curiosity and never be afraid to ask questions. Remember, questions often hold the keys to innovative solutions and fresh perspectives.
- Practice Active Listening: Develop the skill of active listening. We have two ears and one mouth for a reason. Listening allows you to truly understand your customers, collaborators, and the needs of the market.
Opportunities for Women:
- Financial Independence: Entrepreneurship offers a unique avenue for women to achieve financial independence. Through innovative ideas, dedication, and hard work, you can create businesses that not only sustain you but empower you economically.
- Freedom of Choice: Entrepreneurship provides the freedom to make career, personal, and family choices aligned with your values. It allows you to chart your own path and strike a balance that suits your individual circumstances.
- Promote and Support: As women entrepreneurs, you have the power to uplift others. Be a promoter, supporter, and cheerleader for other women in the industry. Collaboration over competition can drive collective growth and success.
In essence, the change I would like to see is one where women stand shoulder to shoulder with men, leading, innovating, and transforming industries. By embracing coaching, continuous learning, curiosity, and active listening, you can drive change both in your own entrepreneurial journey and in the world around you. Seize the opportunities to be financially independent, make choices aligned with your values, and champion the success of fellow women entrepreneurs. Your journey can shape a future where gender equality is not just a goal but a lived reality.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned in your personal life and professional journey? What is your personal motto in life?
Embrace change, inspire growth, and champion equality to create a world where women thrive as empowered entrepreneurs and leaders.
Women are a growing force in the workplaces worldwide, standing shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts. There are cracks in glass ceilings everywhere, with many women breaking through to carve out a space right at the top of the pyramid. What are your thoughts about women’s leadership today?
Women’s leadership is undeniably progressing positively, with women increasingly asserting their presence and making strides in workplaces, yet it’s evident that there’s still a significant journey ahead to fully shatter glass ceilings and achieve true equality. Like snowflakes rolling together to build a snowball, our collective efforts hold the potential to create a powerful force for change. Together, we can serve as the catalysts for a brighter, more inclusive future.

Advice for Budding Women Entrepreneurs, here is what I’d like to share with women leaders around the world.
To all the young women leaders reading this, I want you to know that your determination and resilience have the power to ignite change and shape the world. Start small, but dream big; think fast and move swiftly. Strive to remind yourself that achieving 70% of your goal is often more than enough to begin the journey – so take that leap, make your move, and propel your ideas into reality. The first step is the catalyst for change, and it’s time to step off the couch, silence those excuses, and embark on the exciting journey of turning aspirations into achievements.
