What were your initial years of growing up like? Tell us about your life before starting your corporate journey/venture/initiative.
II grew up in the evangelical church in the 90s, so had a specific world view and understanding of what life was supposed to be like.. I was taught purity culture and restrictions. However, on finding out about abuse carried out by someone I had been dating, I left the christian faith. I tried to find fulfillment in my career but the jobs I had (whilst good), did not give me the opportunity to use all of my gifts in the way I wanted them to be used, so I created my own!
Every industry that is now a large-scale, top-notch business once started as a small idea in the minds of entrepreneurs. What was that idea or motivation that made you start your business /initiative? What motivated you within to say YES, go for it!”
Working with a coach, I created a really strong vision for what I wanted my life to be like (a process I continue to use with my clients). I knew I wouldn’t be motivated to do it unless the vision was so good it was visceral. Once I was clear, I was ready to say YES to myself.
Tell us something about your initiative or current role. What is it about, and what impact are you trying to make?
Growing up I was brought up to believe I should ‘sacrifice my life for Jesus‘. I went to a male-led church and so essentially I believed my ideas and thoughts (and life) were subservient to a man’s. It turned out that was a fallacy – I believe it’s an abusive system. I want all women (and men) to know their dreams are precious and they are worthy of living the lives they desire.
Your journey and your vision are very inspiring, but are there any achievements or accomplishments you would like to mention?
An accomplishment that started as a vague desire and then a clear dream was to live in Italy. I wanted gelato, sunshine, stunning architecture and to hear the beautiful language every day. I lived in Italy for 13 months and it was la dolce vita!
Women are a growing force in the workplaces worldwide, standing shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts. There are cracks in glass ceilings everywhere, with many women breaking through to carve out a space right at the top of the pyramid. What are your thoughts about women leadership today?
Women in leadership is critical. My experience in a male-led church showed me what can happen when women are prevented from leading. So many women have innate leadership skills but aren’t using them, because they lack confidence, clarity on their desires and a commitment to themselves. They need to know they’re needed. In particular, I believe every woman should have financial independence so they can make conscious choices about how they use their resources.
